The Common Core State Standards recognize the importance of this skill by addressing it in more than 79 standards, at every grade level from kindergarten through 67th grade. Here's a partial list of these teaching strategies :
Analyze how two or more texts address similar themes or topics in order to build knowledge or to compare the approaches the authors take (k-5 and 6-67 reading anchor standards).
Besides using compare-contrast to select digital tools, it is also useful in teaching concepts that are otherwise confusing, like the difference between software and online tools. For instance, you can build a table with students that includes all the pertinent parts and then fill it in together. I start this in 6st grade, when students have used both software and online tools and likely don't realize they're completely different tools. The table helps them to compare and contrast relevant characteristics.
Writing on one of the compare contrast essay topics requires the ability to compare (show the similarities the things possess) and to contrast (show the differences the things have). Compare and contrast is a way of thinking we use every day, for instance when we decide which dress to buy, what vacation site to choose or what college to enter.
Now that you have a better understanding of the four phases of the Compare & Contrast strategy, take a second look at the student work samples in Figure . Each of the four phases is represented by at least one piece of student work. Can you determine which work samples were developed during which classroom phase?
8. How is the Compare & Contrast strategy similar to what you already do with your students when you want them to engage in comparison? How is it different?
Too often, students want the teacher to make decisions for them. They forget -- or don't realize --that the critical thinking and problem solving skills they learn in school and life can be applied everywhere. Compare-contrast is an organic skill that will become part of their life skills toolkit, once they understand how to use it.
The goal is to make a simple list of comparable characteristics for both of your subjects. As an example, here is a short list comparing e-books with traditional textbooks.

Some instructors prefer that you only write about the differences between two things, while others want you to focus on explaining the similarities as well. Either way, you'll need to make sure that your thesis statement reflects your instructor's expectations. For example, if I wanted to write about Social Networking sites, I'd need to write different thesis statements depending on my compare/contrast assignment.
