When studying at higher levels of school and throughout college, you will likely be asked to prepare research papers. A research paper can be used for exploring and identifying scientific, technical and social issues. If it's your first time writing a research paper, it may seem daunting, but with good organization and focus of mind, you can make the process easier on yourself. Writing a research paper involves four main stages: choosing a topic, researching your topic, making an outline, and doing the actual writing. Notice that both thesis statements not only tell us WHAT the essay will be about, but also WHERE THE AUTHOR STANDS on that issue (his or her opinion) and briefly explain WHY. Make sure that your thesis statement includes these three elements too!

Introducing a quote is important because it clues your reader in to where you are in the scholarly conversation. Think of how puzzled you are when you are following along with a speaker and he or she throws in a random and seemingly unrelated fact even if they explain the relevance of this fact at some point later in the conversation, that moment of confusion is uncomfortable.
